the residency is to build a creative dialogue between the two countries. The residency is open to artists from all disciplines, who are
based in Mexico or the UK. Artists in residence are invited to research 'essential foods' from their host country, and are encouraged to
meet and work with local people and other artists.

In 2014, Antonia and Anna worked together with three other British artists, Rose Arbuthnott, Stephen Moynihan, and Jessie Buchanan to
produce the first stage of the residency in Oaxaca, Mexico. The artists were actively engaged with the local community, meeting with
famers and scientists as well as artists and craftsmen to develop an understanding of the foods in Oaxaca. This culminated in two pop-up
shows (FIELD), the second of which was a collaboration with local artists responding to the themes put forward by the First Food project.

Following the success of the first stage of the residency, the project has received arts council funding and is an official part of the Mexico/
UK dual year (2015). The dual year is a cultural celebration in both countries to ”promote better understanding between our societies.”
With this support it has been possible to invite more artists to take part as well as developing relationships with creative partners
including; The Tallet, the Museum of Rural Life in Reading, the Royal Drawing School and a continued collaboration with Centro de las Artes
in San Agustin, Mexico (CaSa) for further stages of the project.

This summer the First Food Residency has been hosting 7 Mexican artists: Israel de la Paz, Marcos Hiram Rojas Sosa, Polina Porras,
Roque Reyes Mendoza, Jesus Gonzalez, Sofia Galindo and Mario Castellanos. Nicholas and Vanessa Arbuthnott have generously
awarded them accommodation and studio space at The Tallet in Cirencester and after an intense six weeks of work, the artists produced an exhibition: FIELDS AND
TABLES.

While in the UK, the Mexican artists have had the opportunity to visit farms where they have learnt about different types of food production local to Oxfordshire and
Gloucestershire. They have also made creative ties with artists at Reading University and the Royal Drawing School in London, working
alongside their students for study days and sharing some facilities.

It is a great space that serves both as a library, cataloguing the history of rural life, and a museum that reveals the the shifting aesthetics of practical objects over time. This will be an ideal place for artists to find inspiration and knowledge on the First Food Residency. Currently there are projects at the museum to expand the museum and develop public engagement and creative spaces. There is an open day tomorrow (October 4) where these projects will be presented to the public. For more information see Anna Bruce's article:
Having attended Polina Porras Sivolobova’s Performance Art workshop and spent many long hours in the studio and the Library studying the art and practicing, ‘Monsanto and the Milpa, the Milpa and Monsanto’ was birthed, a 20 minute solo performance exploring the subject and characters that pervade the corn debate in Mexico. This included the dance and song of the character of the mother of maize, the women that that stand for the grassroots; growing, preparing and cooking corn in the milpas, walking through the generations of corn based culture in Mexico. The other character arrived on the stage holding a potentially transgenic corn (from a friends garden in San Augustin), a money bearing monster ‘the threat’, a coercive friend. The stage became a map of thought and concepts, from ‘the solution series’ of my drawings to a time line of industrialisation and how this threatens local trade, the performance ended with the destruction of industrially produced products in a cloud of dust, centre stage. Thanks to all that came to see it. Thanks to my fellow performers and to Polina for supporting this huge step for me in making performance art.

Having worked all day in the fields, she struggles with the delicacy of embroidery, which means her work does not sell at the same prices as some of the others. However, although her stye was rougher, I thought it had an honesty and integrity that was very moving.

Marietta described how, although initially being a cause for suspicion, the womens' work has brought them new respect from their husbands.

Anna Bruce uses 'liquid light' to explore ways of printing photographically onto different surfaces. The chemical photo sensitises the surface, producing a high contrast black and white image. Anna is using images of the milpa system, including corn and amaranthe, as well as the crops themselves. They become surfaces or tools for photographic printing and mark-making.

I took part in a fresco workshop last week. My teacher Jesus Gonzalez Gutierrez learnt the technique from Diego Rivera's assistant. We talked a lot about what was true Mexican technique and what was Italian. I made the design to look like like part of a codex; it depicts the aztec god Tezcatlipoca (pronounced Tez-cah-tlee-poh-ka). His name means “Smoking Mirror” and he often represented an evil power. Tezcatlipoca was the patron of the night, of the north, and in many aspects represented the opposite of Quetzalcoatl. I drew him holding a red corn stalk.

I was trying to find an image to represent the transgenic corn debate and thought DNA and godliness had enough in common that this image could mean 'what would happen if the DNA of corn ended up in the wrong hands.' the DNA of corn now is in the wrong hands and here is the symbol!

The technique of fresco consists of adhering layers of sand and lime mixture to a stone or concrete wall and painting on the surface with water and pigments while it is still fresh (a fresco) after 8 hours the painting is absorbed into the surface of the wall so that it will last for 2000 years or more. Lets hope the building is still there, Thus preserving a historic moment. heritage against transgenico!

Our first day out in the fields was with Alba Garcia, who we met through the charity Puente. She uses the traditional ‘milpa’ system to grow a combination of corn and amaranthe, as well as beans and hibiscus. Most of the amaranthe has already been harvested, but we saw fields being freshly ploughed and new seed being planted.

As an initial group of 5 artists, we will base ourselves in Oaxaca as it is historically linked with evidence of the first domesticated use of these foods. As Oaxaca has a strong agricultural and artistic community it provides an ideal environment to engage British based artists in an intuitive response to the original values of the ‘bread’ that sustains us.

Debates around food sustainability are taking a grip alongside climate change and educational institutions are starting to include relevant studies in the curriculum. This is an opportune moment to take a grounded look at the first seeds, where they started and what they are now, in shape, form, influence and how they fit in to our lives, at a real and symbolic level.

The aim will be to stimulate activity at an artistic level, ie. not overtly political, and to encourage a dialogue between the two nationalities in an experience of each others immediate environment. The project will grow in 2015 with an opportunity for a number of Mexican artists to be hosted in Britain to make a similar response.

With a common working arena, (which could be different spaces but within the same area), artists will use different materials and methods to explore their ideas.
