First Food Blog

In the last couple of weeks, we have got to know some essential characters who have shared with us their curiosity and enthusiasm for our project and the ideas we are exploring: Jesus Gonzalez, Polina Porras Sivolobava, Marcos Hiram Rojas Sosa, Marietta Bernstoff and Antonio Turok.

Marietta is involved with a programme called Mamaz, or mothers of maize, and she is actively working with a small community outside of Oaxaca to help farmers through problems they face as they work the land using the traditional Milpa system.

Marietta works with a woman's group in Tanivet, teaching them embroidery as a way of talking out their experiences as they sew and helping them to nurture new skills.

Antonio is a well known photographer in Mexico. He has been working on a beautifully photographed film showing the complexities of the maize culture and where Corn stands at the heart of all matters for Mexican people. The film explores the potency of this original 'first food' as it is revered in faith, family life and its importance in a world food culture.

Marietta and Antonio's daughter Anais is learning the cyanotype process with Antonia Bruce while
assisting her on creating her large maize pictures.

Marcos is an architectural student studying in Cuernavaca and is currently developing a digital map of Oaxaca,  and has expressed an interest in mapping areas of nutritional interest, and possibly presenting some of this research visually in our show later this month.

'First Food' artist, Rose Arbuthnott, has produced a fresco 'Heritage against Transgenico' with the support of Jesus. Jesus learnt the craft from the assistant of Diego Rivera, and is keeping this traditional skill alive in Oaxaca through artist workshops. Rose has also been taking a performance workshop with artist Polina, and is working towards a final performance.
